Project Spotlight: From Blank Canvas to Private Retreat

February is a weird month. Too early to feel like spring, too late to keep enjoying winter. We’re all somewhere between cozying up indoors and dreaming about sunny afternoons outside. So, while we wait for the weather to decide, I wanted to show you an outdoor project we are finishing full of spaces to enjoy the upcoming warm season—because your home deserves a little seasonal refresh, too.

We’re currently working on an outdoor project that started as… well, nothing. A big, empty space with no character. Now? It’s becoming a green oasis—lush plants, layered seating, and smart lighting that turns it into the perfect spot for summer dinners, late-night drinks, and weekend lounging.

This project began as a blank canvas, with multiple areas to tackle—a main seating, dining, and fire pit zone—all designed to evoke a Mediterranean ambiance with a bohemian edge. Our clients, who have Japanese heritage, have entrusted us with previous projects, so we naturally wove in subtle Japanese influences to make the space feel truly personal.

The covered seating area was crafted for year-round use, featuring built-in heating and lighting, yet fully clad in natural teak to maintain warmth and authenticity. Lighting design is more than functional; it’s a vital element of architecture that shapes how we experience space. In our latest Kensington project, a sophisticated residence with over 4 mt ceilings and expansive windows, we worked meticulously with our clients who are passionate art collectors and travel photographers, allowing the lighting design to be carefully curated from the project's concept stage to complement their collection and elevate the spaces they inhabit daily.

This double-height home, offered an abundance of natural light, but also demanded a nuanced approach to artificial lighting. The goal was to create an adaptable scheme that allowed for various settings while enhancing the home's architectural and artistic features. Layering light was the strategy we employed to meet the needs of each space while maintaining a cohesive design language.

Lighting Design for High Ceilings and Natural Light

The main living area features ceilings soaring over four meters, complemented by large windows that flood the space with natural light. While the daytime lighting is effortless, evening settings required careful planning to achieve functionality and ambiance.

Layering light was our primary focus to ensure versatility. Occhio pendants were positioned above the dining area to create a soft glow, perfect for intimate gatherings or formal dinners. These technologically advanced fittings allow for color temperature control and touchless dimming, blending innovation with elegance. The design deliberately avoided pendant lighting in the main seating area to keep the client’s curated artwork as the visual focal point.

Highlighting Art with Symmetry and Glow

The back wall of the living room houses a statement art piece. Instead of traditional overhead lighting, we framed this artwork with travertine and bronze Artemest sconces. These linear fixtures enhance symmetry while casting a soft, warm glow, creating depth and intrigue. This approach maintains balance and emphasizes the art without overpowering the room’s aesthetic.

The living space's wall-mounted sconces, were tailored to complement sliding door details, seamlessly connecting architectural elements. These fixtures function as both lighting and design features, emphasizing asymmetry and forming a harmonious composition across the walls.

Relaxed Lighting for Living Spaces

To create a cozy reading corner and conversational zones, Artemide floor lamps were introduced, offering calming light. These portable pieces provide flexibility for casual evenings or intimate social gatherings, reinforcing the versatility of the room.

In the bedrooms, sculptural Artemide and Vibia pendants take center stage. Their mid-century-inspired curves soften the modern interiors, adding warmth and sophistication. These pendants also highlight the double-height dimensions of the rooms, balancing scale with functionality.

The hallway, a gallery of the client’s travel photography, demanded lighting that emphasized flexibility and precision. We used Flos recessed micro profiles, equipped with directional spots, to allow the client to adjust the lighting as their curated collection evolves. This solution highlights each piece without overwhelming the narrow corridor’s architectural proportions.

A particularly challenging aspect of the project was designing the mezzanine study. With the clients' need for both a reading area and additional accommodation in mind, we devised a solution that seamlessly integrated a daybed and library storage. I really love the little details here, the cushions piping with the luxurious wine velvet of t he armchair. We also work with natural materials on the lighting such as travertine and concrete textures to create a connection with the space below.

The versatility of the second study in the Balham House project goes beyond mere functionality; it's a testament to innovative design solutions that seamlessly adapt to the ever-changing needs of its occupants.

Roll-Out Drawers: From Storage to Workout Station

At first glance, the built-in unit in the second study appears to be a sleek storage solution. However, hidden within its depths are roll-out drawers ingeniously designed to house gym equipment. These drawers effortlessly transform the space, allowing the heavy dumbbells to be easily accessed for a workout session. By utilizing this space-saving feature, the study effortlessly transitions from a serene workspace to an energizing gym environment.

Mirror and Antique Brass Wall Lights: Setting the Stage for Yoga

To further enhance the versatility of the second study, we incorporated a full-length mirror and antique brass wall lights.
