Urban oasis: outdoor design

Project Spotlight: From Blank Canvas to Private Retreat

February is a weird month. Too early to feel like spring, too late to keep enjoying winter. We’re all somewhere between cozying up indoors and dreaming about sunny afternoons outside. So, while we wait for the weather to decide, I wanted to show you an outdoor project we are finishing full of spaces to enjoy the upcoming warm season—because your home deserves a little seasonal refresh, too.

We’re currently working on an outdoor project that started as… well, nothing. A big, empty space with no character. Now? It’s becoming a green oasis—lush plants, layered seating, and smart lighting that turns it into the perfect spot for summer dinners, late-night drinks, and weekend lounging.

This project began as a blank canvas, with multiple areas to tackle—a main seating, dining, and fire pit zone—all designed to evoke a Mediterranean ambiance with a bohemian edge. Our clients, who have Japanese heritage, have entrusted us with previous projects, so we naturally wove in subtle Japanese influences to make the space feel truly personal.

The covered seating area was crafted for year-round use, featuring built-in heating and lighting, yet fully clad in natural teak to maintain warmth and authenticity. A bespoke Japanese-inspired trellis was designed to support a newly planted wisteria, creating a soft, relaxing ambiance alongside olive trees, while Gubi chairs add the perfect bohemian touch.

A significant number of our clients come to us while relocating back to Central London or to the Home Counties—sometimes for school choices, sometimes due to family dynamics shifting, or simply to re-establish themselves in the creative buzz and energy of the capital. But one of the first questions we hear is: “How will I manage such a complex renovation project while living abroad?” The answer lies in having the right team, the right tools, and the right process. At Romano Interior Architecture, we’ve crafted a system built around international clients—especially those moving from Singapore, the Middle East, or Europe—who demand clarity, discretion, and exceptional execution. A Process Built Around You Our process begins with a face-to-face conversation—either at the property or wherever is most convenient to you. We believe that strong design starts with trust and mutual understanding. We take time to truly understand your lifestyle, needs, vision, and practical requirements. From that moment, we manage everything. We don’t overwhelm you with unnecessary information or admin. Instead, we guide you through each stage with calm precision, translating complex decisions into easy approvals and thoughtful updates. Our Communication System – Thoughtful and Intuitive Once your project begins, you’ll be seamlessly connected to our studio, no matter where you are. We offer select clients access to a private portal—an intuitive space where you’ll find everything you need: project milestones, design approvals, and real-time updates. No clutter. No chasing updates. Just clarity, delivered beautifully. Decisions can be made at a glance. Progress tracked in one click. And when something requires your attention, we ensure it’s simple, streamlined, and fully informed. We’ve designed the experience to feel like you’re always one step ahead—without ever feeling overwhelmed. Stay informed at your own pace Samples are delivered to you for tactile review. Presentations happen at your preferred location—or virtually, with all the detail and attention you'd expect in person. Every touchpoint is elegant, precise, and designed to make your experience effortless. Full Turnkey Delivery From architectural details to bespoke furniture and art curation, we deliver fully styled homes, ready for you to walk into. Once construction concludes, our team installs every layer—from upholstery to final decorative objects—so that your London property feels like home the moment you arrive. A Note on Trust We know how important it is to feel in control—even when you’re thousands of miles away. That’s why we’ve invested in a process that’s not just efficient, but deeply personal. We keep our projects tightly curated to ensure we deliver exceptional quality, discretion, and dedication to each client. If you’re relocating to London and looking to transform a property into your ideal home, we would love to hear from you. Let’s begin with a conversation.

If there’s one thing I love as much as designing exquisite interiors, it’s the thrill of uncovering architectural history hidden beneath layers of time. My fascination with historical buildings isn't just a passing interest; it has shaped my entire career. After earning my architecture degree, I immersed myself in the luxury design industry, but my love for history kept calling me back—so much so that I pursued a professional master’s in architecture and archaeology. Along the way, I was awarded several prestigious scholarships, allowing me to specialize in restoration through postgraduate studies. I’ve spent years working in the field, from heritage sites to private residences, where my expertise in architectural conservation is just as crucial as my eye for design.

Fabrics: The allure of quiet Luxury and Rustic Charm The fabric trend this year embraced a quiet luxury grounded in natural palettes and materials. Neutrals reigned supreme, evoking a sense of calm and sophistication. Organic fabrics, predominantly linen, graced upholstery and drapery, bringing a tactile quality to interiors. Earthy tones, including terracotta, added warmth and depth, while unfinished materials and a handmade quality evoked an artisanal look and feel. "Maison et Objet 2023 truly pushed the boundaries of creativity and showcased an exciting blend of timeless elegance and avant-garde innovation. It's a testament to the boundless creativity that continues to define the world of interiors, promising a future that's as sustainable and exciting as it is stylish. But why stop at inspiration? 1. The Power of Rich Hues: As the days grow shorter, introduce a palette of deep, rich colours into your villa. Envelop your living spaces in sumptuous browns and wine accents. Consider luxurious velvet upholstery in decadent burgundy or chocolate tones, like the ' Sennen Sofa' by Sedilia, to create an inviting cocoon.
